Boda Boda Lounge Project: November 21 – November 23
NewsChimurenga are participating in the Boda Boda Lounge Project from Friday November 21 – Sunday November 23. Goddy Leye films will be screening at chimurengachronic.co.za. A press release for the festival follows:
The Boda Boda Lounge Project is a cross-continental video festival that will feature at over 11 spaces throughout Africa including an online exhibition hosted for audiences on and out of the African continent, where works by selected artists will be screened. The term ‘Boda-Boda’ is an adaptation of the word border and alludes to a cross border movement, suggesting physical mobility across lines that represent the divide of land and space universally. Teamed with ‘lounge’, the project seeks to engage questions of mobility within the domestic setting, and how these two notions are now being engaged in our personal spaces.
Altogether, the Boda Boda Lounge Project takes cognizance of the physical aspect of mobility, it attempts to engage with people’s private space and imagine the ways through which Africans on the continent, mostly middle-class do have access to a space in which we are allowed to cross physically and imaginary lines/ borders through the use of the TV set normally located in the lounge room of the house; thus, providing context to the thinking as well as exhibition making within the context of the Boda Boda Lounge curatorial thinking.
The Boda Boda Lounge project also looks at the archive through the feature “Une Hommage à Goddy Leye” where works by the late Cameroonian artist and intellectual Goddy Leye will be shown in the many venues as both tribute and acknowledgment of the vast archive of video works on the African continent and it’s diaspora. The programme will also include symposiums with Lectures by historian Dr Elizabeth Giorgis on Video Art Practice on contemporary Africa: African representation and the “experimental” media, and artist Dineo S. Bopape “Things to say in a Multi- media environment: The Artist” where, Bopape shares ideas (5) for video artists/ video art practice for an artist from the continent, aspects around process, content, technology, spaces for video art, the “market for/ of video art”, archiving, etc. As well as participation from invited panelists in each of the spaces.
